September 8, 2022

Members of the Library Advisory Board met this day in regular session at the Brownsville Library in the Kirk Room, Brownsville, Oregon, at 4:30 PM.

*Present: Chairperson Gwen Landon, Linda McCormick, Barbara DeRobertis, Jennifer Ashcraft (by phone), and Librarian Sherri Lemhouse.

Absent:  Sandy Saltzer

Public: None

Presiding:  Gwen Landon

Mrs. Landon called the meeting to order.  As a first item of business Mrs. McCormick made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 12, 2022, meeting as presented by recording Secretary Sherri Lemhouse. Mrs. DeRobertis seconded the motion. The minutes were approved by all.

Librarian Sherri reported that the Summer Reading Program had 137 participants over the 4 weeks. This averaged out to 34 per afternoon. The young adult program had a consistent 10 participants each week, even though they were often 10 different children. Cool! Our Kick-off Performer set an attendance record of 169. Andy Ferguson aka Red Yarn is an amazing performer and lots of fun. We were lucky to host him this year. The Times (Brownsville) years 2015 – 2021 are now available in hard bound additions. The Friends of the Brownsville Community Library continue to support this project and it is awesome to see these books on our shelves ready to use. Story Time continues to go well. Currently, Ms. Thea plans crafts for 20 children as opposed to the 12 at the beginning of the year. Let the good times roll. The new circulation software is up and running. Volunteers and patrons have been pleased with the new features and ease of use with Biblionix/Apollo. New Library Cards are now printed and available with an information sheet on how to log into each patron account. Patrons can renew, request, and review books. 99% of patrons are grateful for the email or text notices of books due and reserves ready. The system will also let patrons know when their library card is coming due. When we add digital books in January 2023 they will automatically fill into this system and be available to check out.  Fall programing began with Librarian Sherri is In a Pickle Class on August 18. With the busy Library programing schedule, she will teach this again next summer. It was requested that it be on a different day due to Market and other obligations. Other programs this fall include World Cultures & Travel: Burma (9/15); English Country Life (11/17); and Family of Man (12/15). Lawyer in the Library comes back under Estate Planning. This series kicks off with local attorney Danielle Myers conducting ‘Wills or Probate?’. Other programs include Advanced Directives (1/19/23); Funeral Arrangements (4/20/23); and Trusts (5/18). Finally, Librarian Sherri has been invited to be the guest speaker at the September Chamber of Commerce Meeting.

Members Topic of Conversation this month is Fines and Fees. With the increase in costs and the amazing services our Library provides members agreed that it is time to have a small library card increase. The last increase was over 5 years ago and that was a $5 increase. Non-Resident Library cards around Linn County include: Albany and Lebanon: $50, $40 Senior (60+); Sweet Home $35; Harrisburg $25, $12.50 Senior. Mrs. McCormick made a motion to ‘Increase the cost of an Out of City Library Card to $30 with a 50% discount for patrons 65 and older’. Mrs. Landon seconded the Motion. The Motion was approved by all.

Members also discussed changing the wording on the Library Happenings sign at City Hall to include: For Children: Parents & Pals Story Time Tuesdays at 2 PM; Songs, Rhymes & More Fridays at 11 AM; For Adults: 3rd Thursday of each month at 7 PM. 2022 Schedule features World Cultures & Travel and Estate Planning; Book Club 3rd Wednesday of each Month at 7 PM.

Board Members expressed excitement and gratitude for the new software and are looking forward to the digital books and audiobooks in January.

There being no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting will be Thursday, October 13, 2022, in the Kirk Community Room at the library.
