Summer Reading Program Week 1

Summer Reading Program Week 1
Children's Time Capsule

Week one of our month long Summer Reading Program was a hit. We had over 45 adults and children in attendance, including 22 children under 8, and 6 kids 9 and older. Every kiddo who registers receives a free book and a reading log to bring back the following week for another prize! Join us for the remaining Friday programs to participate! (Future dates and details below.)

Our younger crowd started their day with story time, hosted by our very well known and loved preschool teacher, Chandra Evans. After a few stories, singing and dancing we all ventured out behind the library to create a time-capsule poster to be put up for 3-5 years and pulled out during a future Summer Reading Program. Each child also created a time-capsule of their own including a 2019 penny, "all about me" paper, and a list of suggested items for their time capsules.

Our older kids spent their time with Melissa Selby, learning all about bees in the world around us. In addition to the knowledge shared, she also provided some rather neat photographs for the kids to look at. Each child in attendance was able to plant a sunflower to take home and try a honey stick! When asked about their experience, one kiddo said "I have a better understanding of what they are and what they do for themselves and us!"

Join us for week 2, next Friday, July 12th from 11am - 12pm. Ag in the classroom with Teacher Carolyn Jackson, for our younger children, while our older kids (9+) will be experimenting with slime!

Week Three - July 19th, 2019, All ages- Our Place in Space - Join us and the U of O Museum of Natural and Cultural History for an adventure in space.

Week Four - July 26th, 2019, Preschool and younger children- Junk Art Journals - Create a story with the Junk Art you build and make, write them down with journals made from cereal boxes and more!

Preteen and Older- Join us as we create our own comics, and make projects involving our favorite superheroes!
