Library Advisory Board Minutes

The approved minutes from the January 14, 2016 meeting

January 14, 2016

Members of the Library Advisory Board met this day in regular session at the Brownsville Library in the Kirk Room, Brownsville, Oregon, at 4:00 PM.

*Present: Chairperson Joey Running, June Schlosser, Jamie McConnell, Kristin Whitehead, and Librarian Sherri Lemhouse, and City Administrator S. Scott McDowell, and Administrative Assistant Jannea Deaver.

 Absent:  Jennifer Ashcraft

 Public: Kathleen Swayze

 Presiding:  Joey Running

Mrs. Running called the meeting to order.  As a first item of business Ms. Whitehead made a motion to approve the minutes of the November 12, 2015 meeting as presented by recording secretary Sherri Lemhouse. Mrs. McConnell seconded the motion. The minutes were approved by all.

Mrs. Swayze asked to speak with the Library Advisory Board about the Oregon Library Passport Program (OLPP). She explained to the Board that this program would allow Brownsville Library patrons to check out books at other participating libraries in the State of Oregon. At this time there are over 140 participating Public Libraries. Currently there are more than 200 Libraries in the State of Oregon. Individual libraries determine what services are available to OLPP patrons. For example, how many books they may check out, can they check out videos, use the computers, and the like. Mrs. Swayze said she called many smaller and the librarians said ‘they love it.’  The larger libraries often have multiple copies of each title for check out. Our library typically has one of each title. Mrs. Running asked if there were any drawbacks, Mrs. Swayze reported that she knew of none. Board members asked Librarian Sherri about this program. The Board has talked about this program in the past. It is our goal to encourage community members to use our library. As more patrons use our library they help make their local library better. Board members will have time to think about this idea until the February meeting.
Librarian Sherri reported that the new light fixtures are being installed. There will be funds to install dimmer switches to help control the brightness of the soft white LED lights. Budget time is coming up. A new library roof is the only large item on the list. The 2016 Summer Reading Program theme will be ‘On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!’ There will be programs on the five Fridays in July. These may include tie dye, Dance class, Oregon College Savings Performer, Ag in the Classroom, Outside Initiatives, and so much more!  The Friends of the Library are planning a morning to tidy up the Library Landscape on Thursday, January 28 at 10 am. All Board members are welcome.

City Administrative Assistant Jannea Deaver reports that the work at the City Hall and Brownsville Art Center (BAC) will begin soon. The concrete directly in front of the BAC will be removed and a grassy area installed with a wide sidewalk. Several City Hall staff participated in the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Training recently. 35 people from surrounding communities are working together to develop a sports court at Sodaville Park by September 2016.

Board members delegated responsibilities for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party during National Libraries Week. This event is set for Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 4 – 6 pm in the Kirk Room at our Library.

There being no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting will be Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the Kirk Community Room at the library.
