Library Advisory Board Minutes

November 20, 2014 Minutes
Library Advisory Board Minutes
Members of the Library Advisory Board met this day in regular session at the Brownsville Library in the Kirk Room, Brownsville, Oregon, at 4:00 PM.

Present: Chairman Joey Running, Jennifer Ashcraft, Jamie McConnell, Theresa Wilhelm, Librarian Sherri Lemhouse, and Administrative Assistant Jannea Deaver.

Absent:  June Schlosser

 Public: None

 Presiding:  Joey Running

Mrs. Running called the meeting to order.  As a first item of business Mrs. McConnell made a motion to approve the corrected minutes of the October 16, 2014 meeting as presented by recording Secretary Sherri Lemhouse. Mrs. Ashcraft seconded the motion. The minutes were approved by all.

Librarian Sherri reported that we have more than two story times each week. Our library partners with Learning Tree Preschool and Kidco Head Start. Learning Tree comes in every other week for a story time just for them and takes back to class 15 books. Kidco Head Start schedules a special story time every quarter. They also are checking out 15 books every other week for their classroom. This is increasing children’s book circulation by more than 500 books each year. Also community awareness of our Library and services is increasing in the community. Another first for our Library is the fact that the Division 3-5 Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) are all checked out and there is a waiting list these 16 titles. One more fantastic way our Library is helping youth to love reading! The Friends of the Library 2015 calendars are available and together with the Library book bag would make a great gift. Volunteers are ready to set up the Annual Book Sale on Friday, December 5 with the sale starting on Saturday, December 6 – 13. This year the Friends are offering gift wrapping on Saturday December 13 from 10 – 2 pm. The Book Club is going strong. In December they are reading The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson. Finally, the Library will be closed November 11, 27, 28 and 29; December 24, 25 and January 1.

Members briefly discussed the final pages of the Library Standards and Practices. One way our library could make a small inexpensive improvement would be to locate power strips in key areas for ease of use for laptops and tablets.

On Thursday, December 18 at 4 pm the LAB will sponsor a Volunteer Cookie Exchange.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring a batch of cookies to share and plan to take goodies home.

Board members will provide drinks, decorations and centerpieces as prizes. It will be a fun time to gather and celebrate our Library Volunteers.

There being no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned.

The next business meeting will be Thursday, January 8, 2015 in the Kirk Community Room at the library.
